Whew!

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

A little thing called organisation saved my butt tonight. A hot water tank in one of the apartments in the second or third floor of my apartment building leaked like crazy, and the superintendent knocked on my door to tell me that my storage room was flooded.

Turns out that only a small amount of water reached my storage room, and nothing was ruined. I had recently arranged things so that the room only contained empty boxes and a few items that are destined to be given away.

The adjoining room was not so lucky. I donated boxes that had no trace of water damage, glad not only that I was spared but also that I could help someone. I felt so bad for these neighbours I don’t know – there are only fifteen apartments in the building, but we don’t mingle often and so I’ve never met them before.

That was a close escape, I tell ya.

Miscellaneous Monday thoughts

Ah, what a heavenly smell is chicken, coated in Shake N Bake, when it’s cooking in the oven. Yum yum yum! And what is chicken without a baked potato?

As I wait for this delicious supper, I’m sipping Vanilla Coke and listening to Natalie Imbruglia’s “White Lilies Island” CD. (I have two of her other discs but they’re on another hard drive and won’t be available for a bit. I have plenty of other music, though – 252 hours’ worth!)

I’ve almost completed the jigsaw puzzle I started last Sunday. I’m trying to kick myself out of the habit of starting a puzzle, rolling it up on my handy-dandy Roll-o-Puzz, and then forgetting about it. I’m almost prepared to declare myself a person of too many hobbies because this is a familiar story – begin something, put it away after a couple of hours, then return to it weeks or months later. I must be a “compulsive beginner” ’cause I don’t intend to quit working on each project; I just move on to whatever comes to mind in my next block of spare time.

The weather forecast doesn’t call for sun until Friday, but I’m not worried at this point. I’m an indoor kind of person, anyway, what with the books and puzzles and movies and Internet…

Dinner’s ready! Ta-ta for now!

Haven’t changed much

Before “The Next Generation” taught me to appreciate “Star Trek” for its characters and stories, I used to watch the original series only to mock. The props, particularly the “styrofoam boulders,” and the special effects were my targets then.

I’ve recently learned that I’m still a heckler at heart. I caught myself talking aloud during an episode, criticising the music. The theme song I respect, though I do like TNG’s better. It’s just that every time there was a hint of conflict, I heard the same notes, episode after episode. Do you think I wouldn’t notice so much if I didn’t have the entire series at my fingertips? No, I don’t either. ;)

Guess there’s no hope for me; I’ll always scoff a little at the show. Perhaps that’s part of the fascination for me. ;)

Song of the moment: “I Want You Back” by Mel B. and Missy Elliot (There’s no accounting for my music taste, is there? LOL)

Recipe for a pick-me-up

Thursday, August 25th, 2005

Disclaimer: This recipe will not work for all temperaments. Substitute as needed for individual application.

1 hot shower to relax muscles
1 nature walk for exercise
1 half-hour or more of favourite music
1 trip to library for preferred reading material
1 meal or snack composed of comfort food and favourite beverage

Woke up this morning feeling blah and not simply because I had a headache. (Sometimes get those upon waking as a result of too-low blood sugar levels during sleep.) Applied above remedies – with the aid of Bif Naked’s latest CD, Amanda Quick novels, and scrambled eggs with toast – and I’m feeling much better now. :) I work this afternoon to evening, then morning to afternoon tomorrow, so here’s what I’ll keep in mind if my good mood begins to fade:

- Scrapbooking Night at the church is usually only one Friday per month, but there’s a second session tomorrow. I’ll bringing writing and scrapbooking supplies so I have plenty of options for accomplishing something. :)

- This weekend, between chores and such, I plan to do the following: work on jigsaw puzzle (I’m down to the hardest part, distinguishing between shades of snowy trees and snowy ground), read novels, phone family members, watch at least two more original Star Trek episodes (closing in on the end of the second season and really wanting to get on to The Next Generation, which was the series that started my Trek obsession).

- Have six consecutive days off beginning next Wednesday. They will be spent in the excellent company of my husband! :D :D

Quiet weekend

Not much going on here. A few chores on Saturday, a bit of reading and TV. Today was even lazier – just reading, TV and a jigsaw puzzle. :)

Been listening to Black Eyed Peas – didn’t think I’d like them, but I’ve recently heard a couple catchy tunes and decided to re-evaluate. Glad I did!

Silliest thing I heard today: “The Terminator” labelled as a classic movie by Detroit’s ABC station. (BTW, it seems strange that we get that network from Michigan while the others come from New York…) Sure, it’s been 21 years since it came out in theatres, but that doesn’t make it classic to me. The term makes me think instead of Fred Astaire, Humphrey Bogart, Audrey Hepburn and Gene Kelly.

Oh yeah, almost forgot about posting my thoughts on something I mentioned in an earlier post: Didn’t know what to expect with the 1992 “Wuthering Heights” movie, but in the end, I liked it. Maybe I’ll tackle the novel some day. The other Brontes were pretty talented, and I bet Emily shared the same talent gene. ;)
