Three cheers for Lisa Samson

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

I finally got to reading “The Living End.” I loved the story! Colourful, memorable characters and very realistic plot. I knew I would enjoy it, but Lisa has a way of exceeding my expectations. :D

I think “Tiger Lillie” should be my next library request. :D

TV Talk

Saturday, September 24th, 2005

Let’s dive in, shall we? Some familiar faces, possible new friends and a couple farewells…

Gilmore Girls – Though I miss the close friendship between Lorelai and Rory, I’m glad the writers aren’t going to patch up the problem in one episode and act like it’s not a big deal. “Smart Rory” has disappeared for a while, and we’re seeing the consequences of “Dumb Rory.” ;) BTW, I hope Paul Anka stays. :)

Big Brother 6 – Boring ending to the season since it revolved around the people I didn’t like. I’ve seen some mean contestants before, but Maggie’s team blew them all away. And I think upcoming BB houseguests should study the show just a bit more, maybe talk to people who’ve had subscriptions to the live feeds – Maggie thought that the HoH bedroom was safe, so she didn’t realise all the nasty stuff she said there was witnessed (and reported online at sites like JokersUpdates).

NCIS – I’m still a bit peeved that one of the main characters is out of the picture, but it is making an interesting storyline as everyone left behind deals with it. And for a totally odd comment (but fitting for someone like me who notices hair styles before anything else): I hated the new director’s do when she first appeared in the office – just wasn’t flattering on Lauren Holly.

Rock Star: INXS – Took me about half the season to warm up to JD, but I’m thrilled that he won. Maybe I became totally convinced of his talent when he performed “Pretty Vegas” for the first time… (That better make it onto an INXS CD soon.)

Survivor – Nothing personal against Morgan, but I’m glad she went rather than a stronger player. That’s how the game should be played, in my opinion.

Ghost Whisperer – Pretty good series opener, though I must say that I hope the ghosts aren’t all as creepy as Paul Adams started out – looked more like a zombie than a ghost when he first popped up. My favourite part of the show: the woman telling Melinda off when she refused to give a message to the guy at the VFW office. Though it can’t be fun to sound crazy ’cause you can see and speak to ghosts, your problem is nothing to the spirit that’s stuck on earth… ;)

Numbers – Good, of course. Next time I’m not going to get so comfy on the couch and fall asleep during the last 15 minutes, which is when all the action happens…

Still haven’t seen Lost, but that’ll probably happen today. :)

Bookworm on a rampage

Thursday, September 22nd, 2005

I haven’t had a ton of time to write lately, and I’m not stressing yet. (Will do if I don’t get to it on the weekend, but there’s no point inviting trouble at this point.) Reading requires less work, and sometimes only half my attention ;) so here are the books I’ve finished lately:

“Truth or Dare” by Jayne Ann Krentz – Quite enjoyable, with more mystery than she usually has for one novel, but you’d expect that when one of the main characters is a private detective. Besides, most of the time, it’s the mystery I want and the romance is the secondary aspect to me.

“The Glass Flame” by Phyllis A. Whitney – Almost didn’t get through this book because the main character wasn’t tough enough for me; helpless women are boring narrators and one doesn’t care so much whether the murderer catches her. But Phyllis surprised me by introducing more courage when the woman isn’t just out to discover the truth for herself, but for her nephew and his father. I guess love is a powerful force, eh? ;)

“Callander Square” by Anne Perry – Haven’t finished this, but I’m closing in on the solution to the mystery. I love the Victorian setting, a character in itself. :)

Next novel to read is “The Living End” by Lisa Samson. Been waiting for this one and finally the library has it in their system. Someday I’ll have to try reading Lisa’s first novels, but from what I’ve seen, I’m much more into her modern stories. Her characters, and insights on life throughout the novels, are excellent.

Will talk about TV shows in another post. I’m a couple days behind but a Saturday off will cure that. :D

Survivor is awesome!

Friday, September 16th, 2005

OK, so it was only the first episode, but I loved it. I was glad to see Stephenie and Bobby Jon back, and I hope that his tribe gets immunity at least once before he gets the boot – each one of them needs to experience the win of an immunity challenge. :)

Hopefully, both tribes will see the previous contestants as assets, not their biggest threats, ’cause I didn’t get enough of them last time. There’s also my disgust for the “strategy” of voting the stronger players off before the weakest ones. I think you should whittle your team down to its strongest elements so you can win plenty of challenges, and only after that’s been done, begin to protect your butt for the final three or four in the game. (So really, after the merge takes place and you’ve cleaned out the weakest from that new tribe, then you have my blessing to consider throwing out the strong people.)

Good morning!

I’m feeling quite efficient this morning. Last night all I accomplished was watching a couple movies and starting “The Alibi” by Sandra Brown (it’s OK but so far not the best mystery I’ve ever read). Today, however, I’ve already cleaned up the kitchen and vacuumed before breakfast. I should probably keep going while I’m on a roll. ;)

I have the “Phantom of the Opera” soundtrack playing so I can enjoy the story and the music even though I haven’t made the time to sit and watch the DVD. Isn’t that a good reason to get movie soundtracks?

Just learned that I was a bit mixed up about the start date of the next “Survivor,” so I’ve corrected my last post that counted down to the show. And now it’s only two days away! :) :)

All right, back to my cleaning. Have a good day!
