Feeling homey around here :)

Tuesday, January 31st, 2006

I’ve been taking it easy with this whole unpacking business, but now I crave more organisation. Time to stop procrastinating and get down to it!

This is breaktime from the “work.” Dido provides the background music. :) Other tunes today: the “Instant Star” soundtrack, and a customised playlist of Jennifer Lopez’s best songs. (I started the day with another viewing of “Bride & Prejudice.”) I’ve got a bottle of Coca-Cola Zero – is there any difference between it and Diet Coke, I wonder, ’cause I think they’re just changing the name – and plenty of yummy cookies and chocolate in the cupboards, so it’s all good chez Rebecca!

I have a gazillion novels to read, thanks to the reunion with my entire collection, and it’s difficult to decide where to start rereading. At the moment, I don’t recall much of the plot of “A Tangled Web” (one of my numerous L.M. Montgomery books) so I may give that a go. I’m a big fan of multiple readings of novels (and many viewings of favourite movies), though I usually stick to plots I haven’t memorised yet – the exception being Jane Austen tales, Disney cartoons, and the movie “Sliding Doors.” (Those, I want to know inside and out!)

I’m going to raid the kitchen for an afternoon snack, then lose myself in the storage room for a while. There should be a review of “Underworld: Evolution” in the next day or two, so stay tuned!

Getting settled

After five years in the Maritimes (Nova Scotia for two years, then New Brunswick) I’m back in Castlegar, BC, feeling more and more at home in our new place. I have lots of boxes to unpack, but I enjoy that sort of thing. Besides, I’m getting some of them from my parents’ house, which means it’s like Christmas all over again when I open them up and see books or videos that have been in storage for so long.

I didn’t go online often for most of this month, so it’ll be a week or two before I get to all of my favourite sites. I miss the gals at Katie MacAlister’s forum, the Christian Bookshelf at iVillage, and the wonderful readers and writers at the Faith in Fiction message board. I also have to play catch up with a lot of blogs. If you’ve been missing my presence anywhere or wondering if I’m reading your journal, hang in there and I’ll pipe up soon. :)

In reading news:

- I picked up a Harlequin romance called “The Inconveniently Engaged Prince.” (Yes, the word “prince” snagged me. Better get used to the fact that I’m a hopeless romantic.) I did have an issue with intermittent “head-hopping” (ie, switching the character point of view without warning) but still enjoyed the book. Next time I turn up my nose at the Harlequin label, remind me that it’s not all bad. :)

- Couldn’t get into “The Cat Who Talked Turkey,” but it’s in line for a second chance sometime.

- Devoured “The Light of Eidon” by Karen Hancock and will be on the lookout for others in the series (“The Guardian King” is the name, I think). :)

I should get some dinner on the go soon, so I’ll write again in a couple days. Toodles!

No more doggy experiments yet ;)

Maybe today I’ll get a chance to try “Lady and the Tramp” with the dogs around, but I have a feeling they can tell the difference between TV and real life quite easily. Either that or the barking on “101 Dalmatians” was just gibberish in dog language and they ignored it…

We should be moving into our new place soon, so I won’t see the dogs much unless we house-sit/puppy-sit. One of these days we’ll get ourselves a dog and a cat – there’s something about a pet that just makes an apartment or house feel more like home, isn’t there?

Haven’t watched many movies or checked out new CDs in some time, but I can happily report that I’ll get to satisfy my curiosity about “Spice World” soon – one of my sisters owns it (and I could have my own copy from a used book/music store for $3.50 if I wanted). Feel free to tell me whether or not you enjoyed it ’cause I still suspect some really bad movies are great at entertaining (ie, it’s so bad it’s good), and I’ve heard that “Spice World” is bad.

Well, that didn’t work…

If you’ve seen “102 Dalmatians,” you’ll remember that the dogs in the movie enjoyed watching “Lady and the Tramp.” Makes for a very cute scene when they all sit/lay down to see it.

While doing a bit of “dogsitting” this afternoon, I thought I’d try a dog-centred movie out with the puppy and six-year old dog I had with me. Maybe I should have tried “Lady and the Tramp” ’cause they’ve ignored the animated “101 Dalmatians,” not interested in the least even when the Twilight Bark came along.

Ah well, I’ll just have to dream up another experiment. ;)

See ya later, alligator!

Well, this is it: our last full day in Fredericton. We have a small amount of cleaning left and a few things to buy for the trip across country (including a new book or two :D ).

I’m so excited about seeing my family again and being close enough to call them up for a visit! I also miss the mountains in BC. It’s been fun to see parts of the country I thought maybe, just maybe, I’d see some vague day in the future; but when it comes down to it, the Maritimes don’t feel like a permanent home to me.

I’ll talk to you on the other side of the move, and if I come across anything interesting, you can bet it’ll be written down for blogging purposes. :)
