Say “Hi” to the giraffes!

I finished another puzzle today. My plan is to upload a photo every time I solve a jigsaw puzzle, so I can show off my collection and have proof of what I’ve done with my spare time. ;)

All right, now it’s time for writing!

Becca’s life: an update

Where have I been? What am I doing with my days? All your questions shall be answered. ;)

I’m watching lots of Olympic coverage, but trying not to be glued to the TV at all hours of the day. I did, however, watch the entire gold medal game in women’s hockey. :) I’m also really interested in speed skating, freestyle skiing and the three sliding sports – bobsleigh, luge and skeleton. (Feel like I should call ‘em “tobagganing sports” ’cause I’m a Western Canadian.) Actually, when it’s time for the Olympic games, winter or summer, I find myself wanting to catch almost every event!

As usual, I divide my spare time between reading, jigsaw puzzles and writing. I still haven’t established a daily writing routine, though I’ve talked of it often for the past couple years. At this point, I get to my story when I’m in the mood, which doesn’t exactly lead to great progress!

I finished a Jayne Ann Krentz romance yesterday (“Eye of the Beholder”) and then got about halfway through John Grisham’s “The Broker.” (I don’t normally whip through books so fast without skimming ;) but it was a day for relaxing and reading.)

Having a schedule that is, so far, considerably less busy than last year means I can no longer hide behind the excuses that kept me from exercising regularly. I plan to walk every weekday morning unless the weather is awful. (And I won’t be wimpy about that, either.) I’m keeping my eyes and ears open for healthier snack ideas, too. Though spring should bring outside activities on the weekends, for now I’m allowing those to be my lazy days. :)

That’s probably all that’s interesting at the moment. If you think of a question for me, post a comment. :)

BTW, here are a few quick movie reviews: “Curious George” is great, and “Underworld: Evolution” is way too violent for kids but I enjoyed it. On video, I recently saw “The Chronicles of Riddick” (cheesy) and “Must Love Dogs,” which I’d recommend for romantic comedy nights. :)

“You learn something new every day”

I don’t normally read biographies – I’ve been stuck on novels for years – but “The Grace Livingston Hill Story” came with the collection of Grace’s fictional works (minus a few short stories) that my mum gave me. Grace’s grandson Robert wrote the book, and I appreciated the “behind the scenes” look, not only at the life of the author but also how she became so successful with her writing.

With the happy endings in her romances, I guess I expected she didn’t have an entirely exciting life by my standards. Well, you can’t judge an author by her plots – Grace’s first husband suffered from morphine addiction after doctors prescribed it for frequent headaches (probably migraine), then died after an appendectomy. Her second marriage was a mistake, with clashing personalities and ten years of tense home life. For years she was the sole wage-earner in her household, yet she found a way to balance writing and parenting. Throughout all this, she produced a huge body of work, and not just in fiction either.

I’m amazed and inspired by Grace’s story. She started with writing as a hobby but made it a career when necessary. Who’s to say I can’t rise to the challenge of disciplining myself to write regularly and well? Not me!

I’ve added a few more albums to my photo gallery. Most of the pictures aren’t new-as-in-2006 but new-as-in-I-finally-uploaded-them!

Go, George, go!

There weren’t many choices last night for Valentine’s Day date movies, so we went with a kids’ movie – one I’d wanted to experience since I saw the theatrical trailer.

“Curious George” is funny, cute and definitely appropriate for all ages. (Sometimes a G rating doesn’t mean the show is as clean as we expect…) And I’m thrilled to see that a TV series is in pre-production (according to IMDB.com). The character may be over sixty years old, but he’s still cool to me. :D
