A long time ago…

… in a galaxy far away, Becca wrote a blog post. ;) (I purposely didn’t use the exact wording from “Star Wars” ’cause it’s best not to look like you’re plagiarising, even if you want to make a pop culture reference. LOL)

So yeah, it’s been a bit since I chatted with the wide world that is the Web. Besides work (I’m the circulation manager for the local newspaper office, and we produce a weekly community paper and a regional paper as well) I’ve been doing the usual schtuff – watching TV, reading a novel, chatting with friends online… Oh, and I’ve baked a bit now that Fall is here. It’s nice to share the goodies with the folks at work so that I can enjoy baking without worrying about eating too many treats.

Speaking of treats, we went to Boston Pizza for dinner on Monday. Yummy! And I had a slice of vanilla bean cheesecake just because. :)

Now for my usual entertainment report: “Alchemy” (with Tom Cavanaugh and Sarah Chalke) is great, and “Aquamarine” (with Emma Roberts and JoJo) is entertaining – be warned, however, that it is a movie for teen-aged girls so it may seem a little silly at times. :) Nelly Furtado’s latest CD is growing on me, and I love the local radio station’s “Nineties at Noon” program is one of the best things about my lunch break.

I’ve had some ideas about one chapter in my novel, but I haven’t made time to write them out yet. Still feels good to be inspired. Hope that happens with my other writing projects.

This coming Sunday marks my church’s first service in a new building, the one that used to be my junior high school. I’m excited, and I’ll be super-happy to organise the books in the library – the old building was also a school, but not as big, so I anticipate a better design and feel for the new library. :)

See you soon!

It’s Leslie’s turn again :)

When today’s Scenes & Beans post showed up on my screen, I actually didn’t recognise it as my writing. LOL It’s been so long since I wrote that original post to get the role of Leslie Brymes that I’d forgotten how it started. Go check it out, anyway, K?

Book review: “Poinciana”

Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

Once upon a time, I enjoyed reading Phyllis A. Whitney’s first-person mystery and suspense novels. I read a lot of them, not noticing that they were pretty formulaic. Eventually, however, I became bored with them because they all seemed so similar.

Recently, I thought I’d spent enough time away from Phyllis’ writing, and borrowed “Poinciana” from my mum’s personal library. I’d never heard that title before, and foolishly expected a brand new story.

Alas, I was mistaken. The woman telling the story is the same wealthy, orphaned young bride I’ve met in the other novels, and, of course, she learns that her new life isn’t all she expected. Add in the practically-obligatory death with suspicion of murder, and you’ve got almost every other Phyllis book out there. Boring, and disappointing!

Nothing personal directed toward Phyllis, but I’m tired of getting my hopes up when I choose one of her books. If she has an autobiography, I’ll bite (she just turned 103 so she’s got to have some interesting stories from her own life), but otherwise, I’ll just remember fondly the days when I was ignorant about the lack of originality in her plots…

Multiple choice sucks

This is not me, but the quiz thinks it is:

You Are Bad Girl Sexy

Girl, you are nothing but trouble. And that’s hot.
You’ve got the classic bad girl sexiness mojo going on.And your badass attitude makes men fear you – and crave you.Don’t give into people who say to tone it down. You’re perfect as is.
What Kind of Sexy Are You?

I’m more like girl-next-door, pretty-ordinary sexy. ;) ;)

Take the Lead

Take the Lead movie posterThumbs up for this flick. I’ve been waiting and waiting for it at the local video store, and finally it was in! (OK, so maybe it didn’t take that long for a copy to be returned, it just felt like it.) I was surprised to see one of the main actresses from “Step Up” in the show, and doing hip-hop just as well as ballet or contemporary.

As previously stated, I like dancing movies, so there’s one point in its favour right off the bat. ;) I thought the story was good, and the characters sympathetic. (Nothing worse than watching a movie where you don’t care what’s happening to the men and women onscreen. Same goes for books, which should be obvious, but tragically isn’t realised by some authors.)

The music played a huge part as well – one would expect that when dance lessons are the focus of the plot, but that doesn’t always mean it works out well. Fortunately for everyone who worked on “Take the Lead,” it doesn’t disappoint!
