Willow Grove, Part VIII

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

The rest of the tale so far: Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII.

The unholy union has been postponed. I didn’t have anything to do with it, though, since I couldn’t work up my courage to tell Martin what I thought of Tanya. I have to believe he’ll come to his senses soon.

In the meantime, we have other important matters to deal with in our lives. First and foremost is Rob.

He went travelling before starting his new job, so that he’d have a chance to play tourist before he gets down to business. Halfway through the planned worldwide voyage, he became sick. He flew home as soon as he could to see his doctor and was referred to an oncologist.

Best estimates are that he has less than a year to live because there’s an inoperable tumour in his brain. Life isn’t fair, ’cause we’re talking about the nicest man on the planet, whose dreams don’t include getting rich and being famous. Instead, he wants all nations to be educated and equipped for their economic and social good.

Melissa’s helping him through chemo and experimental drug cocktails, but I find it hard to stay positive about the situation. Both Carrie and Martin are sticking close to home so that we have much more roommate time together, even when Rob’s at his appointments.

We all watch WG now. Rob and Melissa will sometimes see it during the week, but they manage to keep quiet until Saturday rolls around and we’re all in front of the TV. For Martin it’s still about mocking the show and that may be the case for Carrie and Melissa as well, but I know Rob is with me in his admiration.

Martin invited Tanya to our last two WG marathons, but she declined, surprise surprise. He probably thinks she’s just uncomfortable around someone who’s ill, so he doesn’t talk about this new withdrawal from interaction with his friends. Doesn’t he recognise the pattern by now?

Coincidence? Maybe not.

A few minutes after I read this news about the Spice Girls, “Wannabe” came up on my MP3 player. Interesting…

What was I thinking?

Next time I say that the title or blurb of a Danielle Steel book has caught my attention, remind me how much I didn’t enjoy HRH. So not my kind of writing, with its “they did this, they did that” and hardly any good dialogue to break up the monotony. Show me, don’t tell! And don’t rely on tragedy to get your hero and heroine together!

I don’t even have the urge to check out her early writing to see why there are so many fans of her books. If she started out great I could understand their loyalty – to a point. I just don’t see any hint of greatness in HRH. And aren’t writers supposed to improve with time, as they hone their skills? Could this book (notice I won’t even call it a novel) be her best? Please tell me there’s been a huge mistake and the real manuscript is missing…

All right, that’s enough mean words against a world-renowned author. I’m going to get back to a funny novel about magic in modern-day New York: Enchanted, Inc by Shanna Swendson. So glad it caught my eye in the library!

… at 11:33 am, I was born!

That, of course, entitles me to treat the day as a holiday. If there’s one thing that will keep a person youthful, it’s acting young, and I think my birthday approach is a good start. ;)

Have a good day, folks! Feel free to indulge in my honour. :D

It’s almost here!

Yep, it’s a prolific night for me in regards to blogging.

Anyway, back to the business at hand: There are less than two hours left till my birthday! Yippee!

I just can’t help myself – I love my birthday, my own special day to do whatever I want. Usually that involves a milkshake (since they’re not terribly nutritious but oh-so-yummy), at least one meal I don’t prepare myself, and shopping. :D
